About the Authors

One of the greatest adepts, teachers, writers, and humanitarians of the 20th century, Swami Rama (1925-1996) is the founder of the Himalayan Institute. Born in Northern India, he was raised from early childhood by the Himalayan sage, Bengali Baba. He traveled from monastery to monastery and studied with a variety of Himalayan saints and sages. Swami Rama also received higher education in both India and Europe. From 1949 to 1952, he held the prestigious position of Shankaracharya in South India. He then returned to his master to receive further training at his cave monastery. In 1969 he came to the United States. His best known work, Living With the Himalayan Masters, reveals the many facets of this singular adept and demonstrates his embodiment of the living tradition of the East.

Rudolph Ballentine, MD, is a pioneer of the holistic health movement. A graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine, with specialty training in psychiatry, Rudolph Ballentine, MD, established the Center for Holistic Medicine in six cities. As its director for 25 years, he offered an integrative approach to treatment, using psychotherapy, homeopathy, Ayurveda, yoga, movement, and meditation. He also served as the president of the Himalayan Institute for 12 years and the director of its Combined Therapy Department for 18 years. Author of a number of books, including Radical Healing and the classic Diet and Nutrition, he is now retired and lives in the Carolinas, where he practices and teaches permaculture and tantra.

Dr. Ajaya has the unique distinction of being both a licensed clinical psychologist and Swami. Allan Ajaya or Swami Ajaya, as he is also known, received his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin, Department of Psychiatry. In 1973 he was initiated as a Swami in the Himalayan tradition by Swami Rama. This initiation took place in Rishikesh, on the banks of the Ganges, on Shivaratri, a sacred holy day. As Swami Ajaya, he spent years in India studying and teaching yoga and meditation. He has authored and edited several landmark texts that integrate Eastern and Western approaches to healing the whole person.

More on Yoga & Psychotherapy

For thousands of years, yoga has offered what Western therapists are seeking: a way to achieve the total health of body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Yoga & Psychotherapy provides a unique comparison of modern therapy and traditional methods. Drawing upon a rich diversity of experience, the authors give us detailed examples of how the ancient findings of yoga can be used to supplement or replace some of the less complete Western theories and techniques. Yoga & Psychotherapy is accessible to the layperson, yet detailed enough to be of value to the professional.
